Propionic acid is mainly used as a food preservative and as a feed and corn preservative for animal feed. Similarly, due to its antimicrobial properties, it has been studied as a possible alternative to growth-promoting antibiotics. The activity depends on the pH of the substance to be preserved, with the undissociated form being the most active (11 to 45 times more than the dissociated form). They are equally effective against microorganisms and are quite effective against molds.
