FARMATAN D
Farmatan D is a unique blend of tannins (hydrolysable tannins from sweet chestnut wood), essential oils from clove (eugenol) and cinnamon (cinnamon aldehyde), organic zinc, and sodium acetate.
Tannins are a complex group of polyphenols with many beneficial functions in the animal organism. The tannins in Farmatan D belong to the hydrolysable group (HT) and, among other beneficial organic compounds, are very rich in ellagic and gallic acids. These two acids exhibit a strong antimicrobial effect (especially against proteolytic and methanogen-producing bacteria). HT tannins have a protein-binding activity due to reversible ionic and weak pH-dependent hydrogen bonds with proteins.
Essential oils promote proven antimicrobial activity and are used to synergize with tannins in reducing protein degradation in the rumen.
Organic zinc acts as a coenzyme and ligand involved in many enzymatic reactions in the body, contributing to better udder and hoof health.
Key activities of Farmatan D in cattle:
–> Decrease NH3 and CH4 levels in the rumen, leading to better synchronization of nitrogen and energy in the rumen, optimizing protein degradation, protecting proteins from degradation in the rumen, and contributing to a higher bypass fraction and better protein utilization. By binding to proteins in the feed, tannins can protect them from degradation in the rumen, increasing their flow to the intestines. More importantly, tannins bind to surface proteins of proteolytic microflora, inhibiting their activity in protein degradation (less NH3) and ultimately reducing their number. A similar effect is seen for methanogenic microflora, leading to lower CH4 production in the rumen, which means more energy is preserved for other fermentation processes. As it increases the bypass fraction, Farmatan D is used to reduce diet costs by decreasing the inclusion levels of protein sources while maintaining production at the same level.
–> Improving protein utilization with Farmatan D results in higher milk production, increased milk protein and fat concentrations. Additionally, due to Farmatan D’s astringent properties, it improves the consistency of feces, and the reduction of blood urea levels promotes better reproductive performance.
–> Together with the antioxidant action of tannins and essential oils, Farmatan D can reduce somatic cell count in milk, reduce the negative effects of heat stress, and improve reproductive parameters on the farm.
There is a strong antimicrobial effect against Clostridium spp. Tannins can inhibit different stages of the Clostridia development, reducing their number in the rumen and intestines. This results in lower toxin production, less bloating, higher immune response, and better intestinal protection against Clostridium spp. Consequently, there will be a lower incidence of sudden deaths, bloating, diarrhea, etc. Due to these positive effects, Farmatan D can reduce the incidence of one of the most common diseases in beef cattle: Hemorrhagic Bowel Syndrome, caused by Clostridium perfringens type A (bloody diarrhea, bloat, and acute death).
The antimicrobial effects of ellagitannins primarily target G+ proteolytic bacteria in the rumen. One of the bacteria responsible for acidosis and/or bloating is Streptococcus bovis – a bacterium responsible for high lactic acid production and a significant reduction in rumen pH when a high-grain diet is present. By using Farmatan D, the number of Streptococcus bovis is reduced, thus decreasing the incidence of ruminal acidosis and, consequently, liver abscess cases.
