Vitamin D3 is also called the antirachitic vitamin, as it counteracts rickets. It regulates the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus, in particular promoting the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine, regulates the excretion of calcium and phosphorus via the kidneys, controls the incorporation of calcium and phosphorus in the skeleton, and also improves the exchange rate of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D is especially important if the absolute supply of calcium and phosphorus or the relation of calcium to phosphorus in the feed is not optimal 3. Natural vitamin D occurs in very feeds such as whole milk, liver oils, and sun-dried green fodder. Of the numerous compounds active as vitamin D, only two are of major interest: vitamin D2 and D3.
